CeraMem Membrane Technology from HPD

CeraMemÒ ceramic membranes are a proprietary technology platform that combines innovative design features and unique materials of construction to provide membrane modules at costs comparable to polymeric membranes.  This technology is now offered by HPD, a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies company, through its recent acquisition of the CeraMem  technology (See press release).  This unique technology allows the utilization of large-diameter ceramic monolith membranes that reduce the overall footprint of installed equipment.

The CeraMem family of ceramic membranes were developed mainly for microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) applications and is in development for other membranes, most notably pervaporation membranes. They feature a high resistance to chemical and abrasive attacks while operating at higher temperatures with minimal fouling. HPD's CeraMem technology provides a solution to the most challenging environments such as deoiling of oilfield produced water.

The CeraMem technology was developed with assistance provided by the Small Business Innovation Research Programs of the Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation, and Environmental Protection Agency as well as funding provided by the Expeditionary Unit Water Purification (EUWP) program managed by the Office of Naval Research.

Advanced Low-Cost Ceramic Membranes

HPD's new ceramic membrane modules, utilizing the CeraMem technology platform, can be supplied with a variety of inorganic microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes.  Nanofiltration (NF) and pervaporation (PV) membranes are currently under development.  Key features of these innovative membrane modules include:

  •     Robust large-diameter monoliths as membrane supports

  •     New, chemically-durable, highly abrasion-resistant ceramic MF & UF membranes

  •     Very high packing density with large membrane area in a single membrane module (10.7 m2

  •     Life-cycle costs competitive with most polymeric membranes

In addition to selling laboratory-scale modules for test purposes and production-scale modules for demonstration installations, we can perform feasibility tests in our facility or provide field service support for testing at your site.

These products are suitable for municipal applications (water treatment, secondary effluent disinfection, and membrane bioreactors). The membrane products are also well suited for traditional industrial MF/UF applications.  The latter includes process applications in the food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical and chemical industries as well as wastewater treatment in many industrial sectors.   About sixty (60) commercial installations have been made and multiple pilot trials conducted with the present products and an earlier, "first generation" product. (Applications)

Please contact us to inquire if we have experience with your application.  Or, if you are a membrane systems OEM with interest in a new, unique product, give us a call.
